About this place
Some kissaten have an unpretentious air that feels a little like coming home to your family. That is the impression described by visitors to Café de Echigoya. Set along a lane in Sugamo, Café de Echigoya (カフェド越後屋) is a Showa-era-style coffee shop, where reviews describe the friendly master greeting guests with a cheerful manner.
The handmade curry bread is a natural place to start, and has earned praise from regulars. Alongside the classic round curry bread, the menu features a distinctive long version called “Nyoi-bo curry bread” (にょい棒かれいぱん). Both make an easy pairing with coffee or tea.
There are substantial meal options, too: homely kissaten dishes range from omuhayashi rice and Napolitan spaghetti to yakisoba and Echigoya okonomiyaki. For a leisurely afternoon, the sweets menu includes pancakes, oshiruko and seasonal shaved ice.
In the relaxed atmosphere, conversation with the master and a serving of curry bread or a warm dish offer a moment to unwind.
